CNRS

Joachim Claudet is research director and ocean advisor for CNRS. He has extensive experience in biodiversity conservation, sustainability science, and ecosystem-based management, using place-based case studies to inform management, or regional or global meta-analyzes to impact policy. His work is highly interdisciplinary, bridging ecology, social sciences, and governance to develop actionable knowledge for decision-makers. He specializes in assessing the consequences of biodiversity loss on human well-being and in identifying solutions to mitigate those impacts, with a particular focus on coastal and marine social-ecological systems. His research integrates multiple knowledge systems and disciplines to evaluate the trade-offs and synergies between biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, ensuring that nature-based solutions and governance approaches are both ecologically effective and socially equitable. Lead author of two IPBES regional assessments and of the IPBES transformative changes assessment, he is involved in several scientific committees and international working groups such as the ICES working group on MPAs, the Ocean and Climate Platform, the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, or the IUCN Wolrd Commission on Protected Areas. Joachim Claudet edited a book on marine protected areas at Cambridge University Press.
