Frédérique Chlous is a professor of maritime anthropology at the National Museum of Natural History. Her research focuses on the relationships between humans and marine and coastal environments from a social and cultural anthropological perspective. Her work examines knowledge, skills, social representations of the environment, and forms of governance for natural areas that involve stakeholders. Participatory approaches are tested and analyzed; these allow for consideration of the diversity of relationships that residents forge with their environment, processes of heritage preservation, and discussions of management approaches. Her research projects are primarily interdisciplinary and most often involve stakeholders. For some time now, she has been engaged in addressing issues of inclusivity and equity within international discourse. She serves on several scientific advisory boards focused on ocean issues and environmental preservation.
