Vanessa Lucieer
Professor of Marine Remote Sensing
Vanessa Lucieer is a Professor of Marine Remote Sensing at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania, and Science Lead and Steering Committee Chair of Seamap Australia and Seamap Antarctica. Her research spans marine surveying, seafloor mapping, marine remote sensing and spatial analysis, with a focus on translating acoustic and optical data into decision-ready information for biodiversity conservation and marine spatial management. She has led interdisciplinary national and international collaborations to develop methods for mapping and characterising seafloor habitats, geomorphology and their ecological relationships across temperate and polar systems, including approaches that quantify uncertainty in spatial products used for marine park management.
Vanessa brings directly relevant expertise to the NEPTUNE Scientific Council through her leadership in globally consistent benthic habitat classification, digital mapping infrastructure, and science-to-policy applications for ocean governance. Her expertise aligns strongly with NEPTUNE's priorities in deep-ocean habitat mapping, seamount biodiversity, polar ocean change, ecosystem monitoring, digital twins and public engagement.
