Lionel Guidi

CNRS Research Director — Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche

Lionel Guidi is a Research Director at the CNRS, based at the Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche. He has been one of the coordinators of Tara Oceans since 2016 and head of the "GO-SEE" Research Federation since 2024, whose role is to coordinate the science associated with the various expeditions of the Tara Ocean Foundation.

His research interests range from plankton diversity to the ocean carbon cycle, with a focus on the biological carbon pump (BCP) that links the two. He combines standard biogeochemical approaches with innovative imaging and genomics methods to study the dynamics of plankton and particles across spatial and temporal scales, and their relative importance in the biological carbon pump. In recognition of his results, Guidi received the CNRS Bronze Medal in 2018, which honours the early work that establishes a researcher as a talented specialist in their field.
