Fengping Wang
Dr. Fengping Wang is a Distinguished Professor and Vice Dean of the School of Oceanography at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She also serves as Executive Director of the International Center for Deep Life Investigation (IC-DLI) and Vice Dean of the State Key Laboratory of Submarine Geosciences. She was funded by the National Science Foundation of China for Distinguished Young Scholars, and awarded the Outstanding Scientist medal by the Chinese Association of Microbial Ecology. She has published more than 130 peer reviewed papers in high-impact international journals and delivered more than 50 invited oral presentations (including plenary talks) over the past five years at international and domestic meetings. Prof. Wang focuses on the study of the marine deep biosphere. She has participated in deep ocean expeditions with a Human Operated Vehicle (HOV) four times, diving more than 5000m deep into the ocean. She sailed twice for subseafloor life exploration with the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). She is a world renowned deep-sea microbiologist, leading research on the diversity, evolution, and ecological and geochemical functions of deep ocean microorganisms. She is leading the United Nations Ocean Decade Programme “Global Subseafloor Ecosystem and Sustainability” (GSES). Prof. Wang is an Elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM). She contributes extensively to the international scientific community through leadership roles including Advisory Board Member of the Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI), Scientific Council Member of Mission Neptune, International Board Member and Ambassador for the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME), and Scientific Committee Member of IODP-China.
